This work aimed to discuss introductory aspects about soil fauna. In its scope, the following are presented: i) concept of soil fauna; ii) the classification adopted according to the body structure of the organisms; iii) classification of functional groups based on the trophic criterion; iv) classification according to the specific functions and processes that organisms perform in the soil. Given the discussions carried out, it can be inferred that research on soil fauna is still incipient in Brazil, which highlights the importance of investing in research projects, graduate programs and in the training of researchers, aiming to expand studies involving the edaphic fauna in its various aspects, whether taxonomic, phylogenetic, ecological, among others.
