Gastric cancer is among the most common cancers in Brazil, the most frequent histological type being adenocarcinoma, accounting for about 95% of cases of this tumor. The prognosis of gastric cancer strongly depends on its staging at the time of diagnosis and initiation of treatment, which unfortunately does not follow standardization in Brazil. This study aimed to present the epidemiological profile of malignant stomach cancers in Brazil in 2020. This is a descriptive, longitudinal study using secondary data from the Ministry of Health Data System (DATASUS). Observing the data obtained, a considerable increase was noted in the number of cases of malignant stomach neoplasms in Brazil, where in 2013 we had a total of 5,723 cases, and in 2020 a total of 16,655 cases, with an increase of 291 % of cases in recent years. When stratified by age group, there were more cases in the 60-64 age group where we have a total of 2,266 cases in the year 2020, followed by the 65-69 age group with 2,245, and 55-59 years with 2,142 cases. As for gender, there were more cases in males, with a total of 8,782 cases, to 7,873 cases in females. It was found that in 2020 there was a greater number of cases of treatment initiation in stages 3 (2,179 total cases) and 4 (2,478 total cases) and as for the time to start treatment, there is a greater number in the category “without treatment information”, followed by the category ignored for staging, with a total of 9,047 cases, followed by the category “up to 30 days” with 3,059 cases. Thus, it is clear that there are difficulties in diagnosing gastric cancer in its early stages, thus reducing the chances of a cure. The nursing professionalhas a fundamental role regarding the care of these patients, as they are in contact with them more frequently, in addition to having health education as a strong ally in prevention and health promotion.
